This past week "Pallet Shelters" were installed on the property directly next to CARE on First Street in Tillamook as the latest improvement to the CARE Shelter Village. "Pallet Shelters" are temporary shelters that are made of easy-to-assemble panels, packed flat for shipping.
This village of temporary housing will be operated by CARE. There will be a large group shelter where those needing a safe place can stay night-by-night. The smaller units are for those, who opt to, can receive intensive case management to be assisted to be housed.
“We have some major work still needing to get done,” CARE Executive Director Jeff Blackford said. “The electric vault needs to be installed, the storage unit has to be placed, [and] furnishings need to be ordered.”
Blackford estimates the housing village will open within the next couple months.
Tillamook County was selected as one of eight counties to receive 1 million dollars to create a coordinated homeless services office and a five-year strategic plan which includes creating housing. Tillamook County helped identify a piece of County property for this project and has opted to lease it long-term to CARE so they could develop this area for temporary shelter.
“I am excited each day to look out my office window at the progress on the CARE Shelter Village,” Tillamook County Commissioner Erin Skaar said. “Everyone in our community who is experiencing houselessness deserves a warm, dry, safe place to stay while they get their feet underneath them. Located next door to CARE's offices, this village will expand our network of options to provide shelter and support to many more people in our community.”
